Various Artists Love Is All Mixed Up
Parlophone

Article written by Ged M
Mar 9, 2008.

A remix is just an alternative version of a song. It really started with Jamaican "versions", then in the 80s every single had to have a 12" remix (sometimes with just some extra bars of instrumental to string it out). There are the arty remixes that have little to do with the original and then there are the mash-ups of two different singles mixed together. DJs remix, other bands remix and on their 'Sixteen' single, fans of the Indelicates uploaded their own remixes to the band's site…

Love Is All make it pretty simple for remixers. The have strongly rhythmic punky-pop songs and Josephine has a great Riot Girrl shouty-pop voice to work with so little can go wrong (as long as hacks like Bloc Party aren't invited). But when you have originals as good as the songs from 'Nine Times That Same Song', you're going to have to work quite hard to ensure your mix creates something new and memorable. There are only 5 different songs here, all of which get very different treatments. Maps makes 'Turn The Radio Off' into a gliding shoegazey wonder while Studio take the same song and turn it into some Talking Heads style jittery dance number. Metronomy's version of 'Spinning & Scratching' adds the pounding dance beat typical of Metronomy and turns it into a floor filler. Hot Chip make the artiest version in 'Felt Tip' but the Bees' masterful Mod version of 'Make Out Fall Out Make Up' really takes the prize. Generally. it’s a pleasant diversion that reminds you how good the originals are.
