MV and EE: Barn Nova

I suspect that this album was made with the help of herbal stimulants and you’ll need them to get through this as a listener. Essentially the form follows the function: it’s an album recorded in rural Vermont, mostly in Matt Valentine and Erika Elder’s own home studio (called “Maximum Arousal Farm”), with various friends, who include J Mascis. So, not unexpectedly, it’s full of indulgent, groove-based jams and guitar twiddling (Mascis fans will want to hear him soloing wildly, and playing off EE’s more restrained figures, on 'Summer Magic'). If you like the Grateful Dead or the wilder excesses of Neil Young, this might be right up your street but otherwise you’ll find the 11-minute wibbling of ‘Bedroom Eyes’ pretty interminable when sober.
