Malcolm Middleton Sleight of Heart
Full Time Hobby

Malcolm Middleton - Slight of Heart
The chances of finding Malcolm Middleton extolling the virtues of his own self and songwriting capacity are limited. He's true to form on his latest solo outing, though he probably does get as close as he ever will in stating that "I'll write a good song, just give me more time, it's easy hating yourself, it's difficult making it rhyme". It's basically a one man and his guitar (OK, and piano, and violin, and banjo, and drums...) folky album and lacks the stylistic range that so marvellously embroidered his previous two records. Nevertheless, the tunes either trip or sigh along in heart-lifting fashion. And there's plenty of his trademark deadpan wit and tenderness to those suffering day-to-day doubt and self-reproach - for instance offering reassurance if not actual hope on Blue Plastic Bags. To add to the six new songs there's a trio of covers, even turning Madonna's Stay into a properly heartfelt plea.

Some artists we love because they show us what could be. Malcolm Middleton is the master at showing us what is and that, while what is might be a bit shit sometimes (or even often), it's basically all right really. Probably.
