Album Review

Marvin B Naylor
The Last Flight of Billy Balloon Barcarolle Records

Article written by Mary B - Jun 22, 2010

Marvin B Naylor could so easily be written off as an over indulging nostalgic act (and he kind of looks like an accountant) but I have to confess that this album ‘The last flight of Billy Balloon’ is nothing short of genius.

You should know what you are in for by the album title alone (inspired by Scott Walker’s ‘Plastic Palace People’).

It’s a brave man who holds the hands of a unique sound and past sound and runs away with them till he finds his own musical niche and Marvin does just that. He’s toured with cover bands in the past and there is a danger that he could just continue in that vein with this album but these songs are fresh individual contributions inspired by tunes that he obviously loved and still does.

Let’s leave aside the twelve string guitar element because I am not an expert on the ins and outs of a six string guitar versus a twelve string but if it produces the kind of sound that has graced my ears for the past ten songs, I’ll have some more please.

Songs like ‘Little Creatures’ are simply stunning. It’s littered with echoes of bands from the 60s and 70s but this does not make Marvin’s sound irrelevant to today’s music scene. All musicians are influenced by somebody or something and his influences appear to have come from Capital Gold radio. Every song a winner.

This is an album that will not leave you feeling deflated but will lift your musical spirit.
