Meg Baird: Seasons On Earth
Seasons On Earth is very old-fashioned folk music. This isn’t the acid-folk that she plays in Espers but sits firmly within the singer-songwriter format, combining lots of delicate picking on her acoustic guitar with her impressive, unadorned voice. The only thing that distances it from the retro sound of Lauren Canyon in the ‘70s is the way it’s arranged, with dobro and discreet electric guitar adding tone and texture to the otherwise pure sound. Unlike 2007’s Dear Companion, this album mainly includes originals, the best of which is the dark and powerfully intense ‘Stream’. But there are also two covers – one is Baird’s folky take on the House of Love’s ‘Beatles and the Stones’, where she makes a silk purse from a sow’s ear, at least when you consider Guy Chadwick’s risible lyrics. The other cover is the best track on the record, a version of the Mark-Almond Band’s ‘Friends’, which shows off her singing and picking at their best. There’s a lot to admire technically, and the voice is gorgeous throughout, but it seems there’s more technique than feel, and it’s all a little too much in thrall to the 70s.
