Mock & Toof
Temporary Happiness Tiny Sticks

Article written by Michael H - Oct 5, 2012

The production duo Mock & Toof tap a deep well of cracked club dynamics and off-kilter pop subversions on ‘Temporary Happiness’, they continually spike hedonistic conventions with doses of melancholy and introspection; amongst the rush of ‘My Head’, a soft organ melody and synth drone emerges, ‘Sleeper’ resolutely refuses to come out into the dawn sun and chooses instead to push on through to the following night.

In fact, the whole of ‘Temporary Happiness’ feels weirdly sunless, from its title to the sweaty enclosed atmosphere, this is no collection of out-of-date gurning Ibiza “anthems,” this is an album for small dark rooms full of people who like to bend their minds and bodies around sounds not merely intended for blokish wom mosh pits. The general sound of the album covers some diverse ground, dub trapdoors, grainy bursts of synth, and a track called ‘Get out of the Vay’ that recalls Madchester in its baggy swagger and thin sounding keyboard poking. It more or less completely ignores contemporary clichés: savage bass drops, shot-to-bits rhythms, beats like doors slamming. ‘Temporary Happiness' turns back to the trance inducing repetition and movement by increments of House and Techno.

Mock & Toof have produced a late night album, a night where you should probably have gone to bed by now and it’s slowly dawning on you that the brilliant time you’re having will have to end at some point. A rainy Thursday rather Friday night album, but who doesn’t love Thursday nights?
