A message consisting entirely of misery and resignation, a repetitive and all-consuming noise that triggers a growing sense of doom, and the suspicion that words are being purposely obscured to the point where you abandon all attempts to decipher what’s actually said.....yep, all the despairing characteristics of our beloved nation’s recent General Election.

However, the ingredients making contemporary politics and the recent weeks of electioneering so awful also happen to be utterly essential to the 29 glorious minutes of hazy Krautrock on offer here.

The pairing of Sanae Yamada and Wooden Shijps’ Erik Johnson deliver enough fuzzy guitars, motorik rhythms and catchy keyboard lines to keep the prolonged tunes involving and atmospheric without ever being dull. Opener “Motorcycle, I Love You” consists of a speedy drumbeat, droning synths and, as the pace builds, more and more layers of guitar feedback. This is all accompanied by the kind of breathy, almost spoken-word, mumblings that Air might attempt should they try to seduce a Neu! fan.

For those preferring a (possibly) substance-enhanced sound, the trippy keyboards and frenzied guitar of “Stumbling 22nd Street” would be most fitting. Clocking in just under the 7 minute mark, it’s the dreamiest song on offer and is both brilliantly dark and hypnotic. Elsewhere, “In the Trees” is the only track where the majority of the vocals could be described as audible, though ironically it’s probably the least engaging song on the LP, with the minimalist components not really building into anything of substance.

Dense and brooding as it is, for Kraut/Stoner/Psychrock fans it’ll still provide a positive, healthy distraction from the more sinister reality that is seeing David Cameron’s smug face sliding behind the door of Number 10; actually, if there was an exclamation mark on the album title, it’d be a sound piece of advice for the electorate. But that’s enough about the fucking Tories because unlike those nauseating goons, ‘Escape’ actually deserves your consideration.
