Moon Duo
Circles Souterrain Transmissions

Article written by Ged M - Oct 27, 2012

Live, Moon Duo are a full spectrum assault on the senses, disorientating and confusing with their droning minimalism and their chiaroscuro light show. On record, they produce more digestible but no less mesmerising pop drones. Opener ‘Sleepwalker’ is a case in point: droney rhythms begin pulsing organically, punctuated by flashes of effects-laden guitar, until the whole thing builds to a lush, melodic chorus.

Ripley Johnson and Sanae Johnson again owe an aural debt to the Velvet Underground and Suicide, which is most obvious on the quickstepping glam rocker ‘Fast Action’. ‘Trails’ demonstrates that this is classic rock’n’roll cloaked in curtains of synthesiser drone and twisted guitar riffs but ‘Circles’ is as radio friendly as they come, the wailing keyboards and guitar adding a little dirt and noise to the killer pop melody. Like on the first two albums, Moon Duo can still scorch your noggin if you let them but if you simply want to wallow in a darker shade of Californian rock, Circles will do the job too.
