Motorama
Calendar Talitres

Article written by Ged M - Dec 19, 2012

Motorama are from Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia but their take on post-punk on their second album Calendar sounds more like the sort of records released in Scandinavia. They're rooted in the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, U2 and Joy Division except for those times that they sound like Interpol. Their guitars chime, their keyboards swell majestically, Vladislav Parshin’s etiolated vocals grumble gothically like Ian Curtis: “we've been sharing one saddle for several years/ but I still don't know where we are going” (‘During The Years’). And lyrically, the words evoke elemental forces, both emotionally and in the Russian landscape – it’s all quite epic.

It’s quite hard for the listener to get over the 80s sound – the band doesn’t seem to be able to put it aside either. Where it’s good – the riff-tastic ‘To The South’ for example – it’s stirring and super-catchy. But much of the rest rehearses well-tried musical routines to limited effect.
