Moustache of Insanity: Album of Death
For an album of death this is full of life. The songs might be inspired by zombie movies and big budget action heroes (“I guess you don’t share my fascination/ with violence, death and gory mutilations” laments ‘We Need More Heroes’) but their casiotoned punky indiepop is insanely catchy. Comprising an Australian and a Swede (Allo Darlin’s Bill Botting and Nik Vestberg), Moustache of Insanity play their A-game with a B-movie mentality. Some of their arrangements are standard indiepop with guitars and samplers, but the songs spin off into surreal new worlds, whether it’s fantasising about having Billy Joel to dinner, complete with Joel-esque piano clattering (‘Dinner Party’), or the stream of consciousness ideas set to an indiepop beat in ‘Alright!’(“a celebrity got malaria/ in a slightly dodgy area/ I can’t think of anything scarier”).

It’s funny and flippant indiepop but not simply throwaway; ‘Superiority Complex’ is a slower, Pavement-ish saunter that makes you think that there’s a lot more here than a few knob jokes. At their best they sound like Jens Lekman meeting the Television Personalities and when you hear lines like “even if you played a mute girl/ I’d believe every single word you didn’t say” in their tribute to horror movie star Lynn Lowry, you know that you’re in the presence of brilliant minds with terrific tunes.
