Neverever
Angelic Swells Slumberland Records

Neverever
Neverever
Despite their great looks and decent post punk influences neither Glasgow’s Bricolage nor The Royal We quite delivered on their initial promise of a few years back. Fortunately a member from each became Mr and Ms Meek, relocated to LA to seek new inspirations, band members and name and have come back even better. They first appeared on our radar a year ago as The Champagne Socialists but have now settled on Neverever and this debut long player dips its twinkly toes in many musical pools across the decades, 50s rock n roll, 60s girl groups, 70s glam, 80s indiepop,,, while sounding bang up to date here in the noughties.

There are many highlights, from the Blondie powerpop rhythms of Coconut Shampoo and Young Runaways to the Talulah Gosh jangle of Blue Genes and the epic soul of the cover Now… from the 60s swit swoonery of 16th Wonder to the quiff tingling Happy Days soundtrack of Teardrop Tattoo. The songs are strong but they only work because Jihae Meek has such a great voice; a dynamite mix of power, sultriness and menace. Coupled with her backcombed jet black hair and short dresses, the Meeks definitely have both style and substance. Now get your bottoms back to Blighty for some gigs.
