Sometimes you grow tired of being fed a diet of indie stodge. It dulls the senses; you think everything sounds like a seventh-hand Libertines or a bootleg Arctic Monkeys. Then something comes along so fresh-sounding that you suddenly realise what you’ve been missing from your life. Dirty Projectors are one such band; the other is Canadian trio No Kids who’ve just released their excellent first album, Come Into My House. In the way they mix up their influences, you’re clearly reminded of Dirty Projectors. It also sounds like a less frantic version of the askew pop made by Of Montreal (singer Nick Krgovich has the sound of Kevin Barnes too).
This has got everything, from classical touches to Arthur Russell-style avant-disco, contemporary R&B, pop and even a bit of doo-wop all laid out in cinematic widescreen. It’s hard to single out particular tracks as there’s no single defining sound but ‘For Halloween’ loads minimalist dance beats onto a pop skeleton while a moaning bassoon walks through ‘Listen For It/ Courtyard Music’ to stunning effect. If your palate needs perking, No Kids are the ones to do it.
