No More of Your Fairy Stories – An indiepop loveletter to Ramones Precordial Catch Records

Article written by Paul M - Jul 29, 2010

No More Of Your Fairy Stories
No More Of Your Fairy Stories
A wise man once said "never perform covers". Actually that man was Jimmy from the Bobby McGee's so 'wise' is overstating it. But it's true. To a degree. You see, covers are still fun, just don't ever convince yourself that your version is better than the original. And for God's sake try and add a twist. The Ramones were of course the archetypal leather clad pop punkers. Their sound was limited, their chord changes famously restricted but they still wrote some crackin' songs. Luckily the sixteen acts here are all indiepop fops, more likely to be seen with a cagoule on their back than dead cow flesh. Naturally, this means their take on the heads down 1-2-3 riffs is different and the fact that most of them have glockenspiels, chimes, recorders, ukeleles or cheesy organs as part of their sonic armoury means they approach the songs from left field anyway. Perfect. Which is just as well as it took over two years to record them all and get the CD out.

It's an impressive array of talent and even includes current Anorak favourites Pains of Being Pure At Heart and All Darlin' but my favourites are the shimmering dreampop rumba that The Motifs somehow turn Sheena Is A Punk Rocker into and the C86 jangle of Danny Says as performed by Liechtenstein.

Ignore Jimmy McGee and buy this and as all profits go to the Lymphoma Association, you'll be helping the organisation that's fighting the disease that ended Joey's life early.
