Now, Now Every Children
Cars Tapete Records

Article written by Ged M - May 6, 2009

Now, Now Our Children: Cars
Now, Now Our Children: Cars
This is a duo who met in a Minnesota marching band and, aged 21, have released a pretty powerful debut album. Their name and some of their press shots suggest an emo band but they’re nothing like. Brad Hale lays down a fearsome beat while Cacie Dallager plays guitar and sings - sings in an otherworldly, almost twee, kind of way that creates a thrilling paradox when set against their loud riffs. ‘Everyone You Know’ is a good example: Cacie sings sweetly, gently, as if her mouth is full of cottonwool clouds, and then suddenly Armageddon arrives; the Pixies-like guitar fires up and there’s enough percussion to give you concussion. In the same way that the sound of our own Blood Red Shoes contradicts their small number, Now, Now Every Children (the name is the only thing I can fault with this band) have a huge presence. On ‘We Know Martha Webber’ they have the same formula with keyboards replacing guitar for the fearsome rhythm. They’re the sound of Rilo Kiley with bigger balls, Mates of State, especially on the keyboard-led tunes, a bit of Metric and the aforementioned Pixies. They got turned away at Immigration when they tried to enter the UK for some shows recently; our loss sadly.
