Phoebe Killdeer
Apparently tossed out of previous band Nouvelle Vague for recurring bouts of what has been described as 'bad behaviour', Phoebe Killdeer picks up with the Short Straws right where she left off with her first Parisian collective. Showing an unabashed admiration for 50's rock'n'roll, but updating it with a sense of Gallic charm, 'Weather's Coming' is a strong and coherent collection of songs that incorporates rockabilly, acoustic folk, bluesy riffs and pop melodies. At times coming across like a less dense 'Rid of Me' era Pj Harvey, Phoebe Killdeer posses one of those strong yet fragile voices that draws you in close but also leaves you feeling cold. Her ability to weave melodies that stick in your head long after the album has drawn to a close is the album's major strength as it covers the fact that, at times, the musical arrangements can be a little formulaic. Standout tracks include future single and leadoff track 'Paranoia' which features Killdeer's trademark vocal styling and the warm 'How Far?' which neatly encapsulates the albums sound in one perfectly formed song.
