Geronimo! Damaged Goods

Piney - Gironimo!

Here at SoundsXP we’ve long celebrated Piney Gir’s general wonderfulness and we’re not about to stop now that she’s released Geronimo. The album starts off in pop-Piney mode. Jaunty rhythms, sleigh bells, Blondie riffs, handclaps, la la las, a lightest dash of arse-shaking bluesiness and plenty of bittersweet punch to the lyrics. Lovely. As the album goes on it gradually changes into country-Piney. More plaintive and vulnerable, but still dreamy. And if you can avoid singing ‘motherfucker’ instead of ‘ is what they tell me‘ on River Song (no, nothing to do with Dr Who as far as I can tell) well, then you’re a better man than me. When you lob in some, literally, overblown trumpets and a touch of distorted guitar then really there’s no excuse for finishing listening without a smile on your face.

There’s a parallel universe somewhere where Piney Gir is a big star. At least her records let us go there once in a while.
