Pumajaw’s Curiosity Box album was an intriguing collection of off-kilter folk given a relatively sparse electronic adornments. Demonmeowmeow marks something of a shift. The starting point this time seems to be bluesy jazz (at the more avant-garde end) with Pinky Maclure in more full-throated and seductive mode. The backing beats and noises are more forcefully constructed. At its best – such as on opener The Mazy Laws, it finds a neat ground between that blues and jazz, Portishead’s recent more extreme outpourings and Jarboe-era Swans avant-garde uneasiness, creating an impressively sultry, slightly gloomy atmosphere.

If there’s a problem, it’s that every so often it all goes a bit slow, even smooth, and attention can wander off. Nevertheless in a world which is (rightly) still lauding Anna Calvi’s more energetic spin on this sort of mannered theatricality, it’s a record that demands you give it a bit of your attention.
