Regina Spektor - Far
Regina Spektor - Far
Far, the already chart topping album from Regina Spektor is her fifth studio album and consistency is something that she seems to have had since the beginning of her career. It is hard not to drift when listening to any of Reginas work, be it her quirky pop songs or her heart shitting love songs. It is the themes that are not far from experience of simple day to day life that give this album its honesty while at the same time gives it a mystery. 'Wallet' a song about the wonder in finding an old mans wallet, her interpretation of his personality through this inanimate prop is beautiful in its simplicity, Regina's innocent nature can sometimes be powerful. I imagine this album was recorded at ease and without any form of stress due to her apparent relaxed nature and smooth vocals. The tender and accessible nature of this album is something that most musicians aspire to but lack the approach.

'The calculation' makes you wonder if Paul McCartney had a presence in the recording studio at the time as there is an overwhelming urge to start singing "Desmond has a barrow in ..." but you can't create such a disruption when listening to a Regina Spektor album but then again Paul McCartney's producer David Kahne did help produce this album. Everything that is admirable about Regina is still present. Her vocals are given dimensions by the use of her quirky representation of the themes. The full use of a backing band is a change but not a change that could cause social revolt.

I am sure by the end of the summer the majority of people will be familiar with this album without buying it 'Laughing with' is something you can be certain of hearing in a popular hospital based drama, can you guess which one? Of course you can. Current odds 8888/8887. This album doesn't need to be a guilty pleasure. Don't worry about it affecting your “indie cred”.
