Repomen - Moore Street Illuminations

Sometimes it just has to be down to luck. We’re a bit late picking up this compilation, but we’ve run the rule over a number of the original releases so hopefully we’ll be forgiven. Hearing their history in one place it reminds you that in the many years the Repomen have been going round Sheffield, there have been many bands across the country doing something similar, less well, to more acclaim. Starting off with a power-pop jangle, through Go-Betweens –like swoon, chiming country-rockisms, angular anthemics, shouty organ-propelled garage through to horn-adorned rockers. The Repomen have had an accomplished tilt at most of what of constitutes indie music over the decades without ever venturing anywhere near the edge of the landfill.

If there’s a reason that they’ve not really taken off further afield, it can only be that they are missing that one song – the one that gets in people’s heads and makes a band impossible to ignore, if only for a short while. But if a band can put together 20 tunes without ever dropping a bollock and dishing up a fair few choice moments en route they really do deserve that bit of luck.
