Russian Circles - Giant Redwood

The problem with a lot of post-rock is that it’s all post and not a lot of rock. Russian Circles belong to the tendency which emerged of out a more metal background and so know how to play a guitar jus’ like they’re ringin’ a bell. Mercifully, on their more thrashy numbers they eschew the temptation to employ a troll to do a ludicrous growl over the muscular ebb and flow, so the Sabbathian moods are left unbroken. It also seems that this album turns down the volume compared to previous efforts and the tone gradually lightens. There’s the odd crescendo, sure, but by and large via some Cult-ish jangling by the third track,there’s a more studied and atmospheric tone, taking in the more measured recent outings by Mogwai, even veering at times close to the sort of sounds heard on British Sea Power’s Man of Aran soundtrack. I say by the third track, because such is the way that they are stitched together the six tracks form a pretty seamless whole. And as a whole it’s mightily impressive, effortlessly bridging the gap between the visceral and more cerebral ends of instrumental rock and satisfying as both.
