Sad Day For Puppets
Pale Silver & Shiny Gold Sonic Cathedral

Article written by Paul M - Aug 30, 2010

Sad Day For Puppets
Sad Day For Puppets
Stockholm’s Sad Day For Puppets now have a settled line-up after four years of changes and presumably this, their second release, is their new settled sound. Guitars are doubled to increase the scuzzy coating and to generally beef it all up, but thanks to Anna Eklund’s floaty vocals and the core melodies, it’s still essentially a pop album. Apparently, the intention was to create something more akin to the Breeders but in truth, there’s as much here that’s indebted to the Cranberries and Catatonia as well as some of the British female fronted shoegazing acts from the 90s, than the harsher edged works of Kim Deal and co. The opening lines from the album, “Sorrow, Sorrow / Come Back Tomorrow / I have no tears for you today”, sum up the overall feel – upbeat, pleasant and nice albeit with a fuzzy layering but the instant appeal of much of it is also its downfall. Nearly every track sounds slightly familiar, as if we’ve stumbled across it on XFM or just caught the tail end of it on MTV2 at some point a decade and a half ago. When the amps are turned off, such as on the lovely Beads, we can finally appreciate something that’s a touch more than good, but a tad generic, scuzzy indie rock.
