School of Seven Bells: Disconnect From Desire
You can get a special edition box set of Disconnect From Desire, also containing a set of 10 “tarot” cards and a special remix of debut album Alpinisms, but none of the contents are essential – not even this album. I surprised myself in typing that as I loved the original version of Alpinisms but this is a very average release, bar two great tracks on Disconnect From Desire: the opener ‘Windstorm’ and ‘Babelonia’. Both of these could be broadly described as shoegazing, soaring like classic Cocteau Twins and with a little bit of MBV noisewash. But that’s really it – the rest of the album is full of dance beats and synth washes, never bad but definitely undistinguished. ‘Dust Devil’ is dance grooved and ‘Joviann’ has some melodic warbling from the Dehaza sisters but most of it just floats past. I’d recommend you download the first two tracks I mentioned and sit, fingers crossed, hoping that they’ll rediscover their k-rock muse again.
