Take a dirty, shirty, flirty, (anything else rhyme with dirty?) dozen songs and turn them into videos and you've got yourself a video album. In the case of SixNationState, you've got yourself a dozen audio/visual treats that appeal to all of the senses. SixNationState have been slowly but surely making their mark in the music world and if this video album, released by Jeepster recordings, is anything to go by these lads are going to gather even more musical pace.
This is quite the eclectic feast for the listener/viewer. It's all here. Silent movies, dead bodies, overgrown bunny rabbits, zombies and magic tricks that put Paul Daniels to shame (though to be fair it wouldn't take a lot to put Daniels to shame).
All of the songs/videos can stand on their own but there are a few highlights on here that appeal to my senses. I love 'Caught the sun' and the broken up photo album that appears to accompany the tune. This song makes me feel melancholy and I think the clever use of photographs from the past intensify these feelings. It's truly a wonder to watch and to listen to. It must be, for i've watched it several times. (for research purposes of course).
Then there is the energetic drum driven, 'So long' which remains my favourite SixNationState song along with a video that is the naughties answer to Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer'. Remember Sledgehammer where Peter's head turned into a hammer and other such wonders? Well 'So long' offers up never ending wine glasses and french sticks that can be grown out of your mouth. Imagine that! Or watch the video...
Some of the videos are very theme orientated like 'I hate the Summer' which is an ode to the silent film era with a soulful, reggae song to accompany its storyline. Then there are the condensed 'rockumentary' type videos such as 'Everybody wants to be my friend' (and they will after watching this video album) which follows the lads on the road and performing live. I couldn't help but notice that there are some torso shots in the pool for the ladies..the camera loves this lot and they love the camera for the astonishing thing about this video album is that the majority of it belongs to the band's own creative ideas.
Yes, there is the odd 'guest' producer and director but the band are responsible for the production and direction of 8 of the 12 visual nuggets on offer here. They're not just pretty faces and musical genius types then.
This review cannot do this Video Album justice. I haven't spoken about 'Taking me over' and the wonderful way in which zombies are used to support this song and its themes. I haven't mentioned 'Up & down' and how the animated puppet wizardry that comes into play here conjures up thoughts of 'Being John Malkovich' for me. There is also something thoroughly endearing about watching a wooden puppet hoody boy 'moon' at the camera... the ultimate act of rebellion.
What I can say is that when you watch a video album and do not have to press the fast forward button once, you realise that somebody is doing something right. Everybody will have their favourites. Everybody will repeat chosen songs over and again but nobody will say that this is not a musical and visual triumph because that is exactly what it is.
The release date for this is May 26th when you can hear and see for yourselves. If you can't wait till then, there is a selection of their videos to be found on their website while you wait...
