Smash Boom Bang! - Songs and Productions of Feldman, Goldstein and Gottehrer Ace

Article written by Paul M - Feb 5, 2012

SBB
Smash Boom Bang! is yet another great comp from Ace Records. Featuring the songs and productions of Feldman, Goldstein and Gottehrer (has a trio ever sounded more like a law firm?), it captures twenty six pop classics from around the mid-sixties. F,G&G were responsible for a shedload of hits, the most famous probably being the wonderful soul of The Drifter (sung by Ray Pollard), fizzing girl pop of My Boyfriend's Back (the Angels) and brimming garage surf of Hang on Sloopy (the McCoys). They also wrote Sorrow, later a hit for Bowie, and I Want Candy, a hit for Bow Wow Wow.

It’s a cracking comp, brimming with feel good, percussion heavy hits. The sleeve notes are always superb with Ace and this is no exception, with Bob Feldman involved in their production, so the inside story of the team and the quirky circumstances of some of the bands and releases are laid out in detail, along with great pictures of the artists. Amongst the many stories recounted… The Strangeloves was a desperate attempt by the trio to beat off the British Invasion of the time with their own exotic manufactured act; the three boys pretending to be Aussie sheepfarming brothers, same mother but different fathers to explain the complete lack of any physical similarities… My Boyfriend’s Back started as a demo recorded by session band the Angels but intended for the Shirelles. The Angels included Jiggs Allbut who Jerry Goldstein was dating, and that was probably why it never made it to the Shirelles… The McCoys were actually Rick and the Raiders, a bunch of young kids rebranded, who were rushed into a studio to perform over a Strangeloves recording to steal a march on the Dave Clark Five releasing their own version of Hang on Sloopy… Well worth a read and of course, you don’t get all that with an MP3.

All in all, it’s another winning hand from Ace.
