Smoosh Free to Stay
Barsak Records

Article written by Ged M
Apr 2, 2008.

Smoosh are two sisters from Seattle, Asya and Chloe, now aged 15 and 13 respectively. Their first album She Like Electric came out in 2005, attracting some seriously creepy coverage and Free to Stay was released in 2006 in the US but is only being released here now. Maybe the reason for the delay in a UK release is quality: this doesn’t have the same kick as the debut album. While they’re clearly a talented pair - especially drummer Chloe, who’s coached by Jason McGerr from Death Cab for Cutie and beats out some very sophisticated rhythms - their influences have become blatant now. The keyboards/drums format is very Mates of State while Anya sounds a lot like Cat Power.

Smoosh make some neat melodies - the first half-dozen songs are well worth a listen, especially ‘Rock Song’, but the restricted format and Chloe’s slurry vocals eventually become wearing, as you might expect from two teenagers on a very demanding recording and release schedule. They produce credible indiepop - just listen to ‘Find A Way’ and ‘Free To Stay’ - but overall it sounds like work in progress rather than the finished article. Journos might like the novelty of young and “cute” girls making pop but that blaze of approval might soon be the glow of burnout.
