Soda Fountain Rag: Reel Around Me
Soda Fountain Rag reminds me of certain elements of Allo Darling; a nose for a gorgeous melody, the smart lyrical touch, and a general freshfaced charm. Just check their university challenge questions, set to a bouncy indiepop ba-ba-ba beat: "are philosophers lonely? Do they eat TV dinners with Wittgenstein?" But showing another face completely, 'You Are Not Invited To My Wedding' is a revenge song: "there's no easy way to say this/ you're the worst person I know". Meanwhile 'Give Yourself A Break' adds a large dose of schadenfreude to its self-help punchline: "I saw a drunk walking into a traffic sign...then I thought my life isn't all that bad at all". You clearly don't cross Ragnhild Hogstad Jordahl, the voice of SFR. But these are actually the things that makes 'Reel Around Me', the Norwegian band's second album, the opposite of ordinary. Every song has its own degree of strangeness. There are elements of Bach that float in and out of 'Pirate Love', where a girl who's lamenting her boyfriend has gone to sea - but he's sailing under the Jolly Roger! 'You Can't Stop Me' is a super-poppy song of empowerment, even if the images are a little strong: “hate me...hit me...kick me...I laugh in your face". It may not be deep (though deeper than you think) but it's instant pop, short, snappy and full of one-liners guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a foot on the dancefloor.
