Still Corners: Creatures of an Hour

Trailed by a couple of excellent singles, the debut album by Still Corners gives you a huge clue to its content with its song titles; names like ‘Velveteen’, ‘Demons’ and ‘The Twilight Hour’ suggest an atmospheric, mysterious, noctural record that more than nods to European and horror cinema for its moods. That makes it distinctive enough but the real magic in the record comes from the marriage of Greg Hughes’ haunted, layered melodies and Tessa Murray’s breathy vocals. They give the spooky ‘Cuckoo’ its sepulchral glow, Murray’s ethereal murmurs punctuated by stabs of guitar and organ, while ‘Endless Summer’ has a thrumming rhythm and a warm, treacly organ sound, plus a catchy chorus formed from the sound of Murray’s wordless whisper. There’s an acid-psych influence too, from the horror-inspired ‘I Wrote In Blood’ to the tucked-up lullaby of ‘The White Season’. Both sound like wintry nights but one chills while the other warmly radiates. Creatures Of An Hour conjures up the memory of Galaxie 500’s dreamy tones and the much-missed Broadcast’s retro-futurist manifesto but without sounding beholden to either. It’s one of the best records of the year: the sound of enchantment, of dreams so pure and perfect you don’t want to wake up.
