Tame Impala: Innerspeaker
Tame Impalas are a four-piece (three, when recording) from Perth in Western Australia, playing very accessible psych-rock, full of spacey effects but with plenty of melody too. There may be whooshing keyboards and guitars that are sent soaring on arrays of effects pedals but you can hear the influence of the Beatles at the core of this record, while ‘Lucidity’ owes some debt to the Who's 'Armenia in the Sky'. For comparison, think of the best bits of Dungen without the language barrier or the guitar solos. Well, most of the guitar solos - as Innerspeaker proceeds, there seem to be more guitars bursting into overdrive, and more fuzz and phasing, with ‘Expectation’ being particularly indulgent. But while the music loses some of its impact over the full album, the first half at least is excellent, leaning more towards pop than prog, with the spacerock of ‘It Is Not Meant To Be’ and ‘Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind?’ standing out. As they're not quite the regulation psych-rock longhairs you might expect, they seem to have largely tamed the urge to rock out and, as a consequence, have made an at-times excellent record.
