Tav Falco & Panther Burns: Conjurations
You gotta have respect for Panther Burns, the outfit that, with the Cramps, invented psychobilly but didn't attract ridicule like later big-haired bands with that tag. This was the band that included Alex Chilton and Jim Dickinson, and revived the dark and dirty Memphis rock'n'roll sound. But the other side of its founder Tav Falco is the performance artist, filmmaker and student of the tango and it’s that side that gains prominence on the current release. Oh dear.

There are a couple of echoes of the rockabilly jungle pop on the Charlie Feathers-channelling 'Phantome Demoiselle' and the slinky rhythm that just about holds up the 8 minute 'Gentleman In Black'. But mainly the album is packed with old Buenos Aires tango rhythms and the accordion sounds of Paris’s Rive Gauche, plus some weird harpsichord courtesy of Bertrand Burgalat (Falco’s co-players are all French on this one). It gets weirder when those old rockabilly rhythms meet sonorous cellos and wheezing accordions head on. Before long it all becomes too much, as Falco melodramatically spouts tales of Mata Hari, trains to Budapest and the lady from Shanghai in his flat, toneless voice. Imagine John Waters playing Don Corleone and you get the overall effect of the record. It tries to project a midnight mood but the effect is more like camp comedy.
