John Stirratt and Pat Sansone are multi-instrumentalist members of Wilco but this album has none of that band’s experimentalism. It’s all classic soft-rock, with impressive arrangements but dull songs. It includes bossa nova jazz (‘City Bells’) and some old-before-your-time Van Morrison soul (‘Feel You Now’) plus the laidback West Coast tones of ‘We Would Never Die’. ‘Estate Remains’ and ‘Simple Explanation’ have the melodic touches of Big Star and Teenage Fanclub but it’s really only the small details - the strings on ‘Criminal’ and the Latin percussion of ‘Canyon Arrow’ for example - that stop you reaching for the off button before sleep takes a grip. They’re a crucial part of Wilco but, when left to their own devices, they’re ever so bland.
