The Canadians A Sky With No Stars
Ghost Records

Article written by Ged M
May 1, 2008.

The Canadians aren’t Canadian; they’re actually five gentlemen from Verona. And unlike all the Italian indie bands I’ve heard lately, their influences aren’t obvious (Radiohead is the sound you hear with most Italian bands). The Canadians, unusually, have a more general 90s-pop sound. The excitable ‘Ode to the Season’ comes across like Weezer but the others have echoes of the Wannadies, Feeder and the like: big-gestured pop songs that sandwich catchy melodies between layers of guitars and keyboards. A couple of tracks stand out: the pretty pop of ‘15th of August’ is like early Teenage Fanclub while the swoonsome ‘Summer Teenage Girl’ is a jangly-heavy melody with an “ooh la la” chorus. Canada or Italy, place doesn’t really matter for such solid and self-assured pop music.
