These are strange days indeed for the music industry. Opinions remain divided whether widespread downloading is an opportunity or a death knell for the labels. While many bands seem equally unsure of its consequences, the Charlatans have embraced the technology, making this album free on the net, via XFM, while gambling that the greater exposure will see more people come to shows, buy T-shirts, and hopefully even the physical format of the album if they really really want to show their love. If the gamble pays off it'll be a nice change of luck for a band hit by more calamaties than usual even for a rock n roll band (currently including a death and imprisonment, as well as the more familiar hard drugs and alcohol addiction). It's also a minor return to form; an LP awash with pleasant toe tapping tunes, perfect for driving to at a steady sixty five, if unlikely to impress the roof down reckless thrill seekers out there. It has a 90s feel, the Charlies heyday of course, though the keyboards remind less of their own early baggy beginnings and more of Electronic, the New Order-lite spin off of the time. Though nothing quite surpasses the excellence of single Oh Vanity and it could do with slightly more variety in its pace, the fact that it costs nil, zilch, nada, means you'd be foolish to look this gift horse in the mouth.
