It does exactly what it says on the tin. Subtitled “singles and unreleased 1995-1997”, you get both sides of the first three singles plus early versions and outtakes from the first album, and a great booklet that describes how the band formed on the seamier side of Detroit. Inspired by rare rockabilly, country and R’nB found in fleamarkets and on Steve Shaw’s extended trip to New Orleans, the Cobras added a punk boost to great soul, country and rock’n’roll songs (plus a Bill Monroe bluegrass tune). Unlike their later albums when you’d need to be a bit of a crate-digging connoisseur to know the original versions, there are covers of slightly better known songs here by Wanda Jackson, Ray Davies, the Supremes and ? and the Mysterians’ (an amazing ‘Ain’t It A Shame’), plus ‘Cha Cha Twist’ that was later re-recorded and made them some well-earned dosh. Rachel Nagy shows she was born to sing this sort of music but there are also early lead vocals from Steve Shaw and Maribel Restrepo. I wouldn’t recommend this above anything else the Cobras have done (hell, get the lot and you won’t be disappointed!) but the compilation shows that the marriage of brilliant sounds with a band that could trademark the word “cool” was a great idea from the start. Just play loud!
