The Lodger
Grown-Ups Angular Recording Corporation

Britpop is unfairly derided these days as a lightweight musical extension of Blair’s Cool Britannia cultural charade. While certainly the political smoke and mirrors of the time blinded us to the deficiencies of much that we briefly celebrated (I’m looking at you in particular, Ashcroft), there was equally a lot of quality and it’s the instant hooks and jaunty melodies coupled with delightfully bitter lyrics of the ‘movement’ that Leeds’ bedsit outfit The Lodger reflect. Effectively a round-up of their limited releases to date, this is a cracking collection of bouncy toe tapping tunes, recalling the works of many English pop masters, most particularly the Smiths, Housemartins, Pulp and the Wedding Present. Assuredly more Kinks than Kingmaker, it’s a treasure trove that could have been buried ten years. Make sure you dig it up.
