Almost exactly a year after their first long player, Grown-Ups, a compilation of early singles, comes the Lodger's first album proper, Life is Sweet. On the face of it, not a great deal has changed; the music is still simple, uplifting guitar led indie pop. It's all still very English, the fusing of elements of the Smiths, the Lightning Seeds, C86 and Britpop, the catchy sunshine melodies contrasting with the bitter lyrics about unrequited love and failed relationships. The one significant difference with the earlier release however is the production. This feels significantly more polished, less the lo-fi outcome of seemingly being recorded in a bedroom and with eleven potential singles on Life is Sweet we'll all hopefully be hearing more of the Lodger in 2008. And that would be sweet.
