The Loungs
Big Wow Fresh Hair

The Loungs - Big Wow
The Loungs - Big Wow
They say good things come to those who wait and, boy, did the Loungs make us wait for their own label released album, 'Big Wow', the follow up to their sparkling debut 'We are champ'. I guess that when you are responsible for the critically acclaimed masterpiece that was the latter, trying to ease in the next album is always going to be difficult. Anticipation is high, expectations higher.

Things have changed a lot in the Loungs base camp since their debut album but I am glad to say that 'Big Wow' maintains the fun loving sound that was embedded in 'We are Champ'.

That is not to say that the Loungs should not be taken seriously, they should, because if you want to see how a band can pack multiple genres into a handful of tunes and make it sound great, then they are your men. It's an explosion of sound and subject matter played out in twelve tracks.

You can dance still but also lay back and listen to the likes of the wonderful 'Gretyl' song, the last track on the album which surely sounds too beautiful to be about a baseball bat?

My favourite tune on here is 'Yer Blooze' because it reminds me of how unique the sound of the Loungs is in comparison to some of their peers. Few bands can take the lovelorn feelings of a robot and produce a song that works on so many levels. This is an intelligent band who absorb their musical influences and churn out something new from them.

Stand out tracks include 'Mind your head', a guitar stomping tune with some beautiful vocals in it and the catchy 'Jack Sarfatti' which is surely a nod to the American theoretical physicist who bears the same name? 'Comet Girl' is like 60's pop meeting glam rock and 'Sunbeat' will flood your speakers with sunny guitar driven pop sounds.

There is a definite universe/space theme flying through this album so perhaps it should have been called Big Bang instead of 'Big Wow'. It's music Jim but not as we know it. Let's not leave it three years for the next one though...
