The Masonics
In Your Night Of Dreams... and Other Foreboding Pleasures Dirty Water Records

Garage veterans The Masonics are now on their eighth studio album (not including work with their various past bands which include The Milkshakes, The Pop Rivets, The Wildebeests, Thee Headcoats and more) and show little sign of tiring of the rock 'n' roll/beat group sound. They deserve kudos for still managing to make things sound fresh. 'In Your Night Of Dreams... & Other Foreboding Pleasures' is an occasionally cinematic album; it's easy to envisage many of these songs being used as a soundtrack.

'Gun-Diddy-I Die' has a Western feel, 'Hurt By Someone' is an update of the maudlin atmospherics used on 'House Of The Rising Sun', and 'I Cheated I Confess' achieves a similar feat with The Beatles' 'I Saw Her Standing There', adding a terrific Buddy Holly solo for good measure. Its noticeable throughout how well these guys can play; they're a tight unit and they know when not to overdo things. We're treated to surf guitars aplenty, notably on the spooky title track and the excellent 'Peter Gunn' swagger of 'Put The Knife Down' where they throw in some organ swirls. The Merseybeat stomp of 'Sorrows Lane' gets the feet tapping and proves that simple rock 'n' roll thrills will always have a place. All in all 'In Your Night Of Dreams...' is by no means a bad way to spend half an hour or so.
