The Peryls
A Man He Was to All the Country Dear Golden Hoof Records

The Peryls
The Peryls
I am no stranger to The Peryls. I have reviewed their music in the past and have long awaited their debut album and now I have it in my hands. It’s a good feeling though I know it’s not going to be an easy listening time with song titles such as ‘Suffer in silence’ which is actually surprisingly optimistic with chants of ‘It’s going to get better’ but not for long. Soon the album descends into that melancholy vibe that The Peryls do so well.

‘A Man He Was to All the Country Dear’ is dedicated to Dr Richard Baker Bellyse who I like to think is the same doctor who lived between the years 1809-1877 and has a memorial dedicated to him for ‘appreciation of a life spent relieving the sufferings of his fellow creatures.’

It would be a fitting tribute, for the musical offerings of The Peryls always seem to explore the sufferings of us human beings and their music in some way alleviates some of the pain experienced. They have a knack of making the ugly seem beautiful with carefully constructed musical compositions and thought provoking words.

The Peryls have a distinctive sound and a stand out example of this can be found in ‘Parliament of owls’ that has this haunting type of melody decorated with moving vocals.

There is an obvious theme running through this album. It’s the tragedy of war. The album artwork will give it away if the host of songs does not. Scattered telegrams and faded pictures tell the story of the heartbreak faced by the common people when battles commence. These songs portray the hidden side of glory, the separations and lost dreams and hopes of the individuals who make up a fighting collective.

‘All at sea’ really stands out and is beautiful as the sentence ‘I’ve been dead forever’ fills my ears along with the title of the album itself, being repeated over the music.

This album finds itself released in the autumn and so it should be. It begs to be listened to while you sit, sipping coffee, staring out of a rain stained window or on your mp3 player as you kick your way through the golden leaves.

The Peryls will be hosting an end of the pier show to launch their album on the 22nd October but really it’s just the beginning for them...
