Tonight

The Positions sound so British, you almost get a waft of fish and chips as their mini-album platter spins. However they’re not; in fact they’re an American sextet, hailing from the relatively unlikely source for new music, Washington DC. Their influences span the decades, with the exuberant horns of early 80s Searching era Dexys, the wistful girl pop of the 60s, and the less melancholic moments of Camera Obscura and the noughties. Nicole Stoops’ delicate, understated vocals sound frightfully English and it’s these that label the band as indiepop when the uptempo percussion and strident brass might otherwise suggest soul. It works and is, in the main, a highly enjoyable experience, though sometimes less is more, and a spot of editing down from the average four minutes a song might have stopped us reaching for the fast forward occasionally.
