The Research
The Old Terminal This is Fake DIY Records

The Research - The Old Terminal
The Research - The Old Terminal
Breaking Up, 2006's debut by Wakefield's The Research was a fizzy popfest of slammed discordant keys and tales of girl/boy love you/love you not japery. It was a joyous hoot and mixed with one or two hearty quaffs of Sunny Delight provided some of the crazier ADHD moments of one otherwise dreary February. Well, the band are back, unbridled by their Big Label masters and seemingly all grown up. The previous key identifier in their sound, the keyboards, are now practically a scarcely used afterthought, replaced by big boy guitars. In fact, the initial reaction is disappointment and it takes a wee while to accept that they really are the same band. However, if you can take the leap and trust in Russell's ability to produce a neat hook and a delightful melody occasionally, then there's still some nuggets to be found despite the new sensible long trousers.

Single I Think She's The One I Love is the pick with its more familiar cheeky electro-pop and sumptuous harmonies but the new jangly string fests of There are No Subs in My Team and Anytime Babe, Anytime and the twisty driving rhythms of Lost Souls in the Vapours show that the new direction isn't without its charms.
