The Rosie Taylor Project
Twin Beds Odd Box Records

Article written by Paul M - Jan 23, 2012

Twin Beds
Twin Beds
The Rosie Taylor Project presumably have far too many things going on in their hectic lives to get into the studio as often as some of us would like. Luckily on those rare occasions when they do, the creative juices seem to gush like a faulty tap with the outcome that this, only their second album in 5 years of recordings, is even better than the terrific low key debut they released back in 2008 .

The title, Twin Beds, seems to sum up their outlook. They sing of the mundane and unexciting, and the everyday disappointments, like checking in for a mucky liaison and finding out that a prudish hotelier has other ideas. But within that world, they seek the positives (like pushing those pesky beds together!), and their wonderfully simple but effective production reflects that, allowing sweet melodies to spill forth despite the predominant downbeat feel. One of the particular joys is derived from the anticipation of the moments when the maudlin trumpets will burst forward like a flickering flame from embers.

So if you prefer your music to be on the folky side of indie and have ever swayed coquettishly to the understated wizardry of Belle and Sebastian or, at a push, the Smiths, then this melancholic masterpiece is a nailed on compulsory purchase.
