The Rosie Taylor Project
This City Draws Maps Bad Sneakers

Article written by Ged M - May 18, 2008

The record is a revelation. It combines the indie-romanticism of Belle and Sebastian and the minimalist folky goodness of the Fence Collective, with additional nods to the Smiths and the Go-Betweens. Amid tales of watching the world go by (‘A Good Café on George Street’) and the joys of cinema (‘Black and White Films’), muted trumpet bursts punctuate the jangly guitars and delicate percussion, revealing a set of beautifully understated yet powerful songs. ‘A Good Café…’ also shows off the smartest writing: singer Jonny Davies self-deprecatingly undercuts the mood with his sharp lyrics: “strangely in my isolation I begin to dream of you and I dancing…it’s strange ‘cos I can’t dance at all”. There’s a melancholy, aching feel yet it leaves you in a state of optimism feeling that, with thoughtful and soulful songs like this, the world can’t be such a sad place after all. Best of all is the final, longest track ‘The Water’s Edge’, which builds slowly and layers voices and instruments, where Sophie’s wailing trumpet and her warm backing vocals both stand out. This is only 31 minutes long but it’s a utterly dreamy half hour that you’ll revisit again and again.
