The Sea And Cake
Runner Thrill Jockey

Article written by Michael H - Sep 27, 2012

Sometimes you want to have your face entirely flayed off by the demons of avant-garde noise, other times you want to furrow your brow and deeply contemplate the almost not-there non-sounds of reductionist improv, but lately I've mainly wanted aural comfort. The Sea and Cake supply this by the truck load on their new album 'Runner.' By this I don't mean to suggest that the album is somehow redundant or inconsequential, it’s just that Sam Prekop and co on this album have delivered a sound very familiar and finely crafted, a sound that almost slips through your mind without entirely registering. Only later do you find that the songs have deeply embedded themselves.

The songs are so natural, organic and sleek, sharking their way out of the speakers, 'On and On' starts the album in fine fashion with a relentlessly bouncing rhythm and smeared washes of guitar. 'A Mere' is like a cool breeze wafting through. 'The Invitation' betrays the albums origins in modular synth compositions that have been reworked into full band compositions, its grainy scale climbing lifting up Sam Prekop's soft drawl.

'Runner' is an unobtrusive delight, a grower in the fullest sense of the term. On a first listen, it’s very pleasant; on a seventh listen, it’s completely addictive.
