The Seal Cub Clubbing Club
Super Science Fiction Jack To Phono Records

Article written by Ged M - May 29, 2009

Seal Cub Clubbing Club: Super Science Fiction
Seal Cub Clubbing Club: Super Science Fiction
It’s as hard to describe the band’s music as it is to say their name. They’re a Liverpool 5-piece who play everything from dramatic funky Prince-isms (‘World of Fashions’) to Mclusky-style riffing (‘PSPM’), prog, psych and even a blast of gospel (‘Secrets’) . It’s a constantly mutating sound, track by track and often within the same song, wilfully refusing to bow to categorisation. There’s Radiohead-style experimentation on the one hand (the woozy psych-prog of ‘Slow-Motion Powerslides (In Dee)’) and prime pop on the other. ‘Aurienteering’ sounds like a cross-dressing Clinic while ‘Dawn Lamb’ is a frighteningly catchy pop song and soon-to-be single. Super Science Fiction has a Scouse eclecticism, heading in every direction, but creating the most satisfying, if varied, listening experience. Produced by Arctic Monkeys producer Barney, it has the potential to break big like them. Just don’t try and sum it up in a sentence.
