The Slummers: Love Of The Amateur
The players in The Slummers are Dan Stuart, once of Green On Red and Danny and Dusty, ND Foster, producer of Richmond Fontaine among others, plus Italians Antonio Gramentieri and Diego Sapignoli. And it just goes to show there’s no way back to former success. After a 20 year hiatus Danny and Dusty made a decent album in 2007, but Stuart hasn’t done that with this record. Sure, some of the people who’ve grown old with him will find the songs on Love Of The Amateur to be up their street – that is if their street is full of regular Americana and Rolling Stones retreads from the last two decades when Jagger and co didn’t care anymore. Of the songs that stick in the memory, ‘Rift Valley Evolutionary Blues’ has a shronky rhythm and the Foster-sung ‘Ironbound’ is a haunting one-take minimalist composition for voice, acoustic guitar and barely-there percussion. But I like ‘Last One Out’ mainly because it reminds me of the better songs of Danny and Dusty and generally the album’s more interesting when it’s more retro. Stuart has been resurrected a few times for Green On Red and Danny and Dusty reunions but he should have stayed buried for this one.
