The Specific Heats: Cursed
It's the paisley underground redux! Not content with paisley cloaks and a purple paisley album sleeve, the paisley sound infuses the grooves of their sophomore release, combining the ‘60s reverb-heavy feel of bands like the Syndicate of Sound and the Music Machine with indiepop energy. 'Sit And Cry' has great Nuggety riffs but typical indie jangleness while 'All I Want' is perfect organ-powered garage rock with a down-the-ages heartfelt plea: “I just want a beautiful girl who understands me/ is that too much to ask?” You can just hear Sky Saxon or Sean Bonniwell singing that on Shindig but it’s also the sentiment of a thousand contemporary indie bands too. There’s a great surf rock influence too, reinforcing the record’s themes of girls, the beach and work as a drag ("don’t be a slave to the working week" advises ‘Hockey Fight Song’) and they add humour to the mix with the madcap ‘Baby I’m An Existentialist’.

Lest you think this is utterly retro (and you never could if you’ve seen the fresh-faced foursome throwing shapes live) you should go straight to ‘End of An Error’, which probably best locates them within that group of fellow Brooklyn bands like Vivian Girls and Crystal Stilts who mine the cooler corners of 1960s garage/surf/psych pop and mix it up with a punky energy. If they were on Captured Tracks or Woodsist you could imagine the buzz about them. If their first album was a band just reaching earth orbit, this one is them going interplanetary!
