The Strumpets: Hello Strumpets
I’m left marvelling at Miguel Horacio Sosa’s pronunciation on ‘Strumpets’ (“Stroum-pet, I’m a stroum-pet/ of a galaxy”) and wondering whether the “Milkman’s Wallet” edition of the album has anything to do with a “wizard’s pocket” but otherwise their modest psych-pop leaves me underwhelmed. On learning the band were from Antwerp, I’d planned a quip about famous Belgians but the leader, Sosa, as his accent suggests, is actually Argentinian. ‘Stumpet’ is a good blend of doo-wop and surf guitar that in a parallel universe might be used by Quentin Tarantino and ‘Gliding In Orbits’ has a swooning 60s pop feel but generally it floats untethered from any real style. ‘The Alcove of Celica’ sounds like Pink Floyd post-Syd and the organ of ‘Who Pulls the Reins of the Sun’ puts you in mind of Procul Harum (and those titles remind you of Amsterdam head shops). Both have bizarre lyrics; the press release talks about Dadaist “automatic poetry” but it sounds like they just didn’t care. “Strumpet” is a fine old English word; so is “whatever”.
