The Wandas
New Wave Blues Own label

New Wave Blues
New Wave Blues
The internet is a truly wonderful place but a terribly baffling one at times too. Endeavours to uncover the myspace page for a London band called the Wandas only served to enable me to discover the delights of another band with that name from Boston, Massacusetts. The Londoners have now rebranded themselves (rather well too - the Werewandas…) to avoid such malarkey in the future but I’m now twenty smackers down and two CDs up from the Americans. The first disc dates from 2005 and is not worth dwelling on (they were clearly listening to too much Queens of the Stone Age and baggy shorted punk at the time) but the second, New Wave Blues, is an excellent more mature platter from last year.

The sleeve notes credit nearly a dozen performers (including various on keys, strings and brass) but the depth to the sound plays second fiddle (ho ho ho!) to the gorgeous floaty vocals of Keith McEachern who shows how to deliver a ballad without making it either mawkish or sopping wet, particularly on the stunning Lose You. It’s not all doe eyed goo though with plenty of midtempo, yes, new wave, moments to satisfy. Bending Over Backwards is pure sugary pop with a killer chorus while Everyday (is as bad as Monday) has a Strokes type hook and a good few “ooh ooh”s harmonies to tap along to. Their website proffers up plenty of free tracks but you can check out Bending Over Backwards here.

Thanks internet.
