The Wave Pictures: Susan Rode the Cyclone
If you’ve already bought the ‘Sweetheart EP’ you’ll have heard 6 out of 10 of the songs on this European-issue album but it’s still worth picking up for the virgin white vinyl and the other four tracks, which are well up to snuff. You know what you’ll get with the Wave Pictures by now: that mix of the whimsical and magical, playful and poetic, full of bittersweet melodies and minor chord heartbreak, and showing off the threesome’s collective musicianship. David Tattersall’s Television-esque guitar soloing on ‘Cinnamon Baby’ is anchored by Jonny Helm’s relentless drumbeat while the excellent ‘Blind Drunk’, which starts like the Go Betweens and progresses through seven shades of addictive darkness, is stalked by Franic Rozycki’s awesomely rumbling bass-playing. The influence of heroes like Darren Hayman, Herman Düne, Jonathan Richman and Lou Reed flicker on the surface of songs such as ‘I Shall Be A Ditchdigger’ but they also have their own individual direction, especially lyrically. “We never gave a shit/ about whether we were or weren’t hip”, sings Mr T on the perhaps autobiographical ‘American Boom’, as they twist indiepop, folk and a touch of alt-country to their own purposes with their usual insouciant skill.
