Trojan Presents: Boss Reggae Trojan Records

Article written by Paul M - Nov 8, 2012

Boss Reggae
Trojan have been gathering up the cream of 60s Jamaican (and some British) reggae and ska for a number of years now and repackaging it all for those of us too busy gasping at the prices of the original 7s on eBay (that's assuming you can actually track them down in a playable condition). Three more double CD efforts have just been released, and at only £5 to £8 a pop depending on where you shop, for forty classics, it's phenomenal value.

This one is titled Boss Reggae and covers the 68-70 period, a time when many British working class kids first started sharing the fashions and music of their new West Indian neighbours. The 'boss' in the title doesn't refer to a particular type of reggae or ska, it was just a word that soundmen wrote on the label of particularly good tunes. Hence, they may take in sounds that border on calypso or soul, but all are infused by the distinctive chugging bass and slightly off-kilter drums. Indeed many of the tracks are re-branded Motown hits given new appropriate lyrics and a different, shuffle paced, rhythm. All are most certainly 'boss' though. Great to dance to, both then, and of course, now.
